The winery was designed and constructed in 1902 by the New Zealand government as the country’s first viticulture research station. It was originally headed by government viticulturist Romeo Bragato. Bragato was considered a key player in establishing New Zealand’s fledgling wine industry. The New Zealand annual Winegrowers conference and awards are named after him. After the New Zealand Government’s ownership, the winery was operated by Rongopai wines from the 1990s until 2007. It was then run as a contract winemaking and bottling facility where all winemaking and bottling equipment has been upgraded to modern winemaking specs. Invivo’s move to the historic winery followed a $2 million equity crowdfunding raise, the first New Zealand Company to reach the $2 million statutory crowdfunding limit.

There are two things you need to know about the gorgeous New Zealand country town of Te Kauwhata. Firstly, if you’re not from around here you probably just pronounced it wrong in your head; secondly, it’s the home of Invivo Wines.

There’s nothing old fashioned about Invivo, but when we clapped eyes on one of New Zealand’s oldest wineries we just had to make it our own.

Back in 1902 the government built the Te Kauwhata winery to work out if we could even make wine here in New Zealand (spoiler: we can). Total wine legend Romeo Bragato ran the place back then and six years later his wines won New Zealand’s first ever international gold medals.

Invivo & Co’s story began when the two of us – Rob and Tim – got together in a bar in London to talk wine. How to make it better. How to cut through the fluff that the traditional wine companies seem to love so much. We always believed in the power of a strong brand, so we decided then and there to build a business that let us create one and have fun along the way. And you know what? It worked.

For our winemaker and co-founder Rob Cameron, Invivo is about taking some of the elegance from the old world and putting that style into our amazing grapes, all the while offering vintages that are fun and a bit unique.

Rob has a ‘colourful’ winemaking background, learning his craft in unique destinations such as Moldova, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Hungary before moving to romantic locations of France, Spain and Italy. He learnt skills (and some wild stories) from these places that few could compare. He’s passionate about making Invivo with a hands-on production style with all our wines.
